Pombal was the stage for the World Model Aircraft Championship
Between August 21st and 29th, 2009, Pombal hosted the World Model Aircraft Championship, in its most technically advanced modality: Radio Controlled Acrobatics. For this event, the largest runway in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe was built, the Pista Internacional de Aeromodelismo do Casalinho, 1 km long and 16 m wide. For 10 days, around 100 of the best pilots from 40 countries competed for the title of World Champion in aerobatic sequences with a high level of difficulty, including maneuvers that cannot be performed by real planes. Four former world champions were present and, defending the title, current champion Quique Somenzini, from the USA.
